Ty is an old friend of mine. We go WAAAAAAAAY back. Like 3rd grade "way back." I've seen him grow as a drummer, and let me just tell you, this guy is the real deal. Some people can learn music. But some people actually "know" music because it lives within them. And Ty is that kind of guy. There is never a moment in which he's not finding a beat from his surroundings or in his head. But in no way is he one of those anti-social geniuses. He's hilarious, upbeat (pun partially intended), a wonderful conversationalist, but most of all – a true artist genius.
After having gone about the music industry in the same droll way, over and over again, he's trying new things now and branching out as a solo act. And lo and behold – it's working for him. I was so happy when he asked me to do a series of photos for his promo kits. It had a been a while since I'd done any music shots, and I was really excited about blowing the dust off for this.
The first series of black & whites were done in his rented studio space. I really wanted to just do some raw shots with no pretense – just him playing, as it speaks for itself. We chatted while we worked, carrying on a conversation about nothing important, all the while he multi-tasked some amazing rehearsal beats. For the second set, we ventured down to downtown Tulsa, as he was interested in having a few done with more of an advertising/editorial feel to accompany the action shots. Again, chatting and laughing, we pulled off some great shots...and I believe I have him half-convinced that if music doesn't work out for him, he has a spot as a Burberry model in London. So dashing.
Hope you enjoy!
